From time to time, team members will share their views stimulated by content from an industry thought leader or news article. Here, our Project Manager, Meghan Wier, discusses the recent BBC article describing a life saving drone delivery of a kidney to a patient in need. “Life-saving kidney delivered by drone”
In this article we are introduced to new technology now in an experimental phase for delivering human organs for transport.
A drone has successfully delivered a kidney – the first of its kind delivery – and the benefits of this type of transport are numerous. Drones are cheaper to operate than a full flight crew, drones are able to move more freely in airspace and organs can potentially reach receiving patients with less cost and potential risk to others. Every second counts in organ transplant surgery and this new technology has incredible potential.
This was just the first of what will surely be many drone flights for organs. This quick, safe, and creative new way to get patients has proved life-saving!
